WikiLeaks, I’m not sure where to start. You’ve certainly upset some important people. And by “some” I mean pretty much everyone in government. That’s impressive. But I’m not here to talk politics.

The Rules: The brand is subjectively rated on five categories and given an overall brand score.

  1. Overall Brand Appeal – 3
Your brand appeal is terrible (or awesome). And I suppose that largely depends on whether you are in favor of leaking classified documents or against it. Personally, I find your brand confusing. I see merit in what you are trying to do… but at what cost?
  2. The Logo – 2
I understand the drippy globe is supposed to be a leak but why the cheap gradient. It feels more like a protest against oil drilling than whistle-blowers anonymous.
  3. Brand Aesthetics – 1
You have none. Your site looks like a third grader designed it. Probably the same one that  designed your logo.
  4. The Tone – 3
    You nobly play the villain.
  5. The Message – 2
“We know more than you. And now you know everything, except things that are too dangerous.”

Brand Score: 15 (out of a possible 25)

Closing Thoughts: My major issue with you, WikiLeaks, is that you decide what is too sensitive to print. And, perhaps, that makes you just as arrogant and corrupt as those you  are exposing.

This Wikileaks thing is amazing. Every country has the right to keep it’s secrets. This Julian guy obviously has a vendetta against the U.S.. He’s an Austrailian right? Would he like to see all of that country’s secrets revealed out in the open? There is no state in the world that doesn’t have state secrets. What about national defence? One thing that is being overlooked is that sometimes such secrets help to avoid war. Did Assange ever think of that? No….he’s looking to embarass the United States and make a name for himself. I believe his 15 minutes of fame will be over soon enough.

I love brands. I have specific ones that are favorites but I just like the idea of branding and differentiation.

So I wanted to begin a discussion about the need for a more thoughtful brand-first mentality in the design field. My thesis is once we understand and know the brand, our creativity will flow naturally, easily and even predictively.
